Sandhill Crane

Sandhill cranes are large birds known for their distinctive appearance and behavior. They have long legs, necks, and a red patch on their forehead. These cranes are often found in wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural areas.

In Southern Ontario, you may encounter the Eastern population of Sandhill cranes. They are migratory birds, with some populations flying south for the winter. Sandhill cranes are known for their unique, trumpeting calls, which they use for communication and to maintain social bonds.
