Stanhope & Community Fly-In

On Saturday, May 4th, the Stanhope Municipal Airport (CND4), located just 12.8 km northwest of Haliburton, Ontario, was abuzz with the excitement of aviation enthusiasts. The airport hosted its annual Spring public fly-in, an event that was free for all attendees.

Despite the weather forecast looking grim up until the day before, Mother Nature decided to cooperate. The morning of the event brought improved conditions and comfortable temperatures, perfect for an outdoor gathering.

While some of the anticipated antique and classic aircraft were unable to attend due to the weather, the event was far from disappointing. The highlight of the show was the Harvard, skillfully flown by pilot Hannu Halminen, and the Tiger Moths, commanded by pilot Doug Watson. These, along with other classic aircraft, were a treat for the eyes.

The event drew a crowd of approximately 600 visitors, with over 100 aircraft flying in from various cities. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet and catch up with fellow aviation enthusiasts.

Notably, the event was graced by the presence of Mayor Liz Danielsen and Councillor Sabrina Richards from the Township of Algonquin Highlands Council, who were also participating in the event.

For those seeking a bit of adventure, plane and helicopter rides were available for a fee. These rides were a hit among attendees, keeping the pilots busy throughout the day. The event also featured equipment from the Algonquin Highlands Fire Services, MNRF FireRangers, and a display of model planes, adding to the day’s attractions.

No event is complete without good food, and this fly-in was no exception. Attendees had a variety of options to choose from, including mouth-watering BBQ from Till Death BBQ and delicious pizza from the Blue Pizza food truck.

In conclusion, the Stanhope & Community Fly-In Spring 2024 was a day filled with flight, fun, and camaraderie. Despite some weather-related challenges, it was a testament to the spirit of the aviation community and their love for the sky.
