The 2024 Aero Gatineau-Ottawa airshow, held from September 6-8, brought together aviation enthusiasts to witness a series of well-coordinated performances that honoured aviation history and celebrated the RCAF Centennial. Despite the weather challenges, the event showcased some memorable moments and demonstrated the hard work of both the performers and the organizers.
Friday saw the best weather, with sunny skies during the practice sessions, allowing teams to fine-tune their performances. This year’s show featured three prominent jet aerobatic teams: the US Air Force Thunderbirds, the UK’s Red Arrows, and Canada’s Snowbirds. Each team presented their signature manoeuvres, showcasing the precision and skill that they are known for.
One of the highlights was the Victory Flight, featuring three WWII-era aircraft from the Mike Potter Collection: the Hawker Hurricane XII (piloted by Joe Cosmano), the Supermarine Spitfire IX (flown by Dave Hadfield), and the P-51D Mustang (piloted by Dave Hewitt). This formation flight was a special tribute to aviation history, and it was well-received by the crowd.
The Nolinor 737 Flypast was another notable moment, as was the CF-18 Demo, piloted by Capt. Caleb “Tango” Robert, which gave spectators an opportunity to see Canada’s frontline fighter jet in action. In addition, Nathan K. Hammond flew the Ghostwriter “Chipmunk,” and Rick Volker displayed his aerobatic skills in the SIAI Marchetti SF260, contributing to the overall variety of performances.
This year also marked the RCAF Centennial, a celebration of 100 years of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The occasion was commemorated with both historical and modern aircraft, providing a fitting tribute to the RCAF’s enduring legacy.
A special thank-you goes out to the volunteers and organizers who worked tirelessly to bring the event together. Their efforts ensured that, despite the weather, the show went on. While conditions were not ideal, the commitment and dedication of everyone involved did not go unnoticed.
Aero Gatineau-Ottawa 2024 may have faced challenges, but it successfully highlighted the strength of the aviation community and the significance of the RCAF Centennial.
