The 2024 Elsie MacGill Awards Gala, hosted by the Northern Lights Aero Foundation (NLAF), marked a significant milestone as it celebrated its 15th anniversary. Held on Saturday, October 5, at the Pearson Convention Centre, this prestigious event honoured accomplished women who have made outstanding contributions to the aviation and aerospace sectors. The awards, named after Elsie MacGill, the first woman in Canada to earn a degree in electrical engineering and the world’s first female aircraft designer, reflect her pioneering spirit and the values of diversity and inclusion.

The NLAF continues its mission to inspire and support women pursuing careers in aviation and aerospace. Each year, the gala recognises exceptional women in various categories, highlighting their achievements and encouraging the next generation of female leaders.

This year’s award recipients include:

Business Award – Laura Sinclair, Co-founder and COO/CFO of Elevate Aviation, recognised for her leadership in promoting diversity and advancing opportunities for women in aviation.

Education Award – Sherry Cooper, Director of Student Services, CFI, Pilot Examiner, and President of Sky Wings Aviation, for her contributions to aviation education and training.

Engineering Award – Pat Greene, Staff Systems Engineer and Technical Lead for the Space Station Programme at MDA Space, for her innovations and leadership in space robotics.

Flight Operations Award – Elizabeth Mitches, Chief Pilot at Porter Airlines, for her exemplary work in flight operations and commitment to safety and mentorship.

Government Award – Captain Erin Edwards, Canada’s first Canadian Astronaut Coordination Officer, recognised for her groundbreaking role and contributions to Canada’s space programme.

Trailblazer Award – Terri Super, Owner and Operator of Super T Aviation, for her pioneering efforts in flight training and aircraft services.

Rising Star Award – Cassandra Hepp, Lead Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) for Heavy Aero, for her promising career and contributions to aircraft maintenance engineering.

Rising Star Award – Zoey Williams, First Officer B777 at Air Canada, for her exceptional skills and rising prominence in the aviation industry.

The event not only celebrates the achievements of these remarkable women but also underscores the importance of mentorship, outreach, and opportunities for the next generation. The NLAF continues to play a vital role in encouraging women to pursue and thrive in aviation and aerospace careers, fostering a culture of inclusion and innovation for years to come.
