Waterloo Warbirds Open House

The Waterloo Warbirds hosted their first Open House of the year on October 26th at Hangar 33, located at the Waterloo Region International Airport. This much-anticipated event, with admission by donation, drew a large crowd eager to enjoy a day filled with aviation excitement and family fun.

Families explored the hangar and admired the vintage warbirds on display. A few young visitors came dressed in Halloween costumes, adding a festive touch to the day, while the Waterloo Warbirds team handed out stickers, and visitors checked out a variety of unique merchandise.

The star attraction was the T-33 Mako Shark Jet. Though its takeoff was slightly delayed due to a sudden shift in the weather—dark clouds, a quick shower, and even a rainbow—everyone waited eagerly. When the Chief Pilot, Ray Thwaites, finally took the jet up with a passenger onboard, cheers broke out among the crowd. The weather cleared just in time, and attendees were thrilled as the Mako Shark flew by, making a beautiful pass under the sunny sky.

One of the day’s most touching moments came right after the jet returned. As the passenger stepped off the plane, she ran into her partner’s arms, sharing a heartfelt embrace and a warm kiss, to the cheers and applause of those watching. It was a joyful scene that added a memorable highlight to the day.

It was a fantastic day, with families and fans enjoying the aircraft, the atmosphere, and the chance to connect over a shared love of aviation. The Waterloo Warbirds Open House was a great success, filled with joy and unforgettable moments for everyone who attended.
