Discover Aviation Waterloo 2025

Discover Aviation is a community-based event that opens the door to the world of flight for people of all ages. Supported by the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA), it offers participants the opportunity to connect with local pilots, learn about aviation up close, and experience the thrill of flying in a small aircraft. It’s a fun and engaging way to inspire future aviators and spark curiosity about careers in aerospace.

On Saturday, June 21, the skies over Waterloo buzzed with excitement as Discover Aviation touched down at the Fliteline hangar. The event was organized by COPA Flight 26 and generously hosted by Derek Hammond and the Waterloo Warbirds.

Although the day was hot and humid, a steady breeze kept things relatively comfortable. A brief rain shower caused roughly an hour-long pause, but once the skies cleared, flights resumed and continued until nearly 4:00 pm, an hour later than originally planned.

A major highlight was the chance for participants aged 8 to 99 to enjoy a free flight in a small aircraft. Most passengers had pre-registered and were asked to arrive just before their scheduled time, which helped keep wait times short. A few walk-ins were accommodated later in the day. Each flight included a short introduction to the basics of flying, making the experience both exciting and educational. More than 80 people took to the skies, returning with wide smiles and heartfelt appreciation. To commemorate the experience, each passenger received a certificate signed by their pilot, a keepsake they were proud to take home.

To make the day even more memorable, COPA Flight 26 provided aviation-themed brochures, stickers, and mini foam model airplanes for passengers. The hangar also featured a booth from the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre, where visitors could ask questions about flight training and explore what it takes to become a pilot. Their presence added an informative and inspiring element for those curious about pursuing aviation more seriously.

A sincere thank you goes out to everyone who made the day possible: the dedicated members of COPA Flight 26, Derek Hammond and his Waterloo Warbirds team, and the many volunteers who gave their time and energy.

Discover Aviation Waterloo was a true community effort, and its success reflects the passion and teamwork of everyone involved. We’re already looking forward to the next adventure.
