This Canada Day, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum hosted a joyful celebration honouring one of the country’s most iconic aircraft. Lancaster FM213, lovingly known as “VeRA,” turned 80, and the museum warmly welcomed visitors to help mark the milestone.

Built in July 1945 at Victory Aircraft in Malton, Ontario, VeRA has become a familiar sight in the skies over Southern Ontario. She is more than just a historic warbird. She is a proud symbol of Canada’s aviation legacy.

On Saturday, July 1, families and aviation fans gathered under sunny skies to celebrate VeRA’s incredible journey. The turnout was fantastic, and visitors arrived in full Canada Day spirit, many dressed in bright red to add to the festive atmosphere.

One of the day’s most exciting moments came as VeRA took to the air for her first passenger flights of the season. Departing at 10:30 in the morning and again early in the afternoon, the Lancaster soared overhead to the delight of her guests. After the flights, passengers joined the crew for cheerful group photos, wearing birthday hats and capturing some truly special memories.

Visitors were invited to sign the birthday card for the Lancaster, proudly displayed inside the museum. Throughout the day, it steadily filled with thoughtful notes from guests of all ages, each one adding a personal touch to the celebration. Activity stations kept kids engaged as they folded coloured paper into flying airplanes. And no birthday party is complete without cake. Guests were treated to sweet cupcakes while supplies lasted, making the day even more special.

A special guest added even more fun to the afternoon. From noon to 2 pm, Stripes, the lively Hamilton Tiger-Cats mascot, joined the celebration, high-fiving guests and posing for photos with kids and adults alike. Later, Stripes teamed up with David Rohrer, President and CEO of the museum, to draw the winner of a thrilling Dakota flight for four over a Tiger-Cats game later this season.

Alongside all the festivities, guests explored the museum’s collection of vintage military aircraft. From interactive avatars to immersive dome exhibits, there was plenty to discover, making the day a full celebration of history and innovation.

VeRA’s birthday was more than just a party. It was a heartfelt tribute to her service, the skilled crew who keep her flying and the connection Canadians continue to share with their aviation heritage. Eighty years on, VeRA remains a source of pride, a story that continues to soar.
