On Saturday, July 5, invited guests gathered at Martin Field in Grand Valley to celebrate 100 years of the De Havilland DH60 Moth. The event brought together familiar faces and a variety of vintage aircraft in a relaxed setting.
Saturday was the official celebration day, but some guests stayed overnight and continued enjoying the weekend through Sunday. The grassroots airfield saw plenty of activity as Moths and other vintage aircraft arrived. There was lively conversation and great company throughout the day. Guests also enjoyed bistro-style meals, with lunch and dinner served on site.
A highlight of the day was the display of 15 Moths arranged on the field to spell out “100,” with a Canadian flag placed inside the first ‘0’. The Martin Field committee worked in the summer heat to position each aircraft precisely. Aprille Holmes captured the aerial view with a drone, providing a beautiful image of the tribute.
A special moment came with the first flight of the day, featuring Dan Garyfalakis in a DH Gipsy Moth and Don Martin in a DH Tiger Moth. Throughout the event, vintage aircraft flew overhead while visitors enjoyed time on the ground, reconnecting and admiring the planes up close.
As the afternoon went on, visiting aircraft began heading out, with several offering graceful fly-bys before departing. A few guests stayed behind to enjoy the final moments at the field with fellow enthusiasts.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the organizers and the Martin Field committee for hosting such a meaningful and well-crafted celebration. Being part of it was an honour, and the hospitality we received made the experience truly memorable.
