The Edenvale Aerodrome was full of excitement on Saturday, August 9 as the Edenvale Classic Aircraft Foundation (ECAF) welcomed visitors to its annual Gathering of the Classics. From 10 am to 4 pm, people came out to enjoy a full day of vintage aircraft, classic cars and family fun, even with the heat and humidity reaching close to 40°C.
The turnout was strong, and the skies were busy with historic aircraft flying in for the event. Visitors saw Harvards, T-28 Trojans, Tiger Moths, Lysander, Fleet Finch, Piper Cub, Fokker Dr.I and Sopwith 1½ Strutter, along with many other unique planes. It was a treat for aviation fans of all ages.
On the ground, there was even more to see. Classic cars, military vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and boats were all part of the display. It was a fun mix of history and style, with something for everyone.
For those wanting to take flight, rides were available in vintage warbirds. Guests could fly in a 1943 de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth or a 1943 Fairchild PT-26A Cornell, both part of ECAF’s collection. The Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association also offered flights in a Harvard, giving people a chance to experience the thrill of flying in a classic aircraft.
A popular stop during the event was the full-size replica of the Avro Arrow, proudly on display for visitors. People could also browse books and aviation items, adding a bit of learning and nostalgia to the fun.
Families had lots to do. Kids enjoyed play stations with airplane colouring, vintage pedal plane rides, airplane toys and inflatable curling. Vendors sold all kinds of merchandise, and there were plenty of food options from BBQ to food trucks.
The Gathering of the Classics was a wonderful day for everyone. Whether you came for the planes, the cars or just to spend time with family and friends, it was a day full of smiles and great memories.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Edenvale Classic Aircraft Foundation, the dedicated volunteers, generous sponsors and all the participants who made this event such a success. We are already looking forward to next year’s gathering.
