On August 16, a light fog hung in the air as golden hour light slowly spread across Lubitz Field. The field began to stir early that morning. By 6:22 AM, the first ultralight aircraft had already touched down, and the steady hum of arrivals soon followed. The occasion was the annual UPAC Convention, a one-day gathering for members of the Ultralight Pilots Association of Canada and their invited guests.
The day was hot, but the atmosphere remained relaxed and cheerful. Pilots, builders, and friends came together to share stories, admire aircraft, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being part of a close-knit flying community. Breakfast was served at 7:00 AM, offering a classic plate of eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast, and coffee for just ten dollars. It was a warm and welcoming start to a day focused on connection and flight.
Throughout the event, visitors browsed vendor tables, chatted with UPAC members, and attended a few technical presentations. There were also opportunities to learn more about ultralight safety and engines, with experts sharing helpful insights in a casual setting.
Some guests opted to camp overnight on Friday, adding to the relaxed feel of the weekend. Although no evening activities were scheduled, the field offered a peaceful backdrop for reconnecting with old friends or simply enjoying the quiet.
The UPAC Convention was not just about aircraft. It was about people. Whether you flew in or drove down, the day offered a chance to reconnect, learn something new, and celebrate the spirit of ultralight aviation in Canada.
