On Sunday, August 24, the 61st Annual Corn Roast Fly-in/Drive-in was held at Sexsmith Airport (CSX7), just northwest of Exeter, Ontario. The event was hosted by COPA Flight 177 in partnership with Sexsmith Pilots Ltd. Surrounded by sweeping farmland in the heart of southwestern Ontario, Sexsmith Airport is the kind of place pilots talk about with a smile. From the air, its wide-open approaches and neatly kept grass runway offer a welcoming sight. On the ground, it feels like a country fair, with clear views of every arrival and shaded spots perfect for relaxing.
The day began quietly as volunteers arrived at dawn. A few pilots took to the air for a peaceful patrol, their aircraft glowing in the morning light. On the ground, others got to work shucking corn on the cob for the day ahead. A light fog sat just beyond the airport, adding a hint of mystery. From somewhere in the farmland came the gentle mooing of cattle, a sound that made city visitors pause and smile, reminded for a moment of the slower pace of rural life.
The sun soon lifted the fog and the skies cleared. Shortly before 9 am, visiting aircraft began arriving one after another. Nearly 50 took part in the event, ranging from classic and modern planes to warbirds and ultralights. Volunteers offered guided tours, giving visitors a chance to get up close, snap photos, and learn more about the aircraft on display.
No event like this is complete without food. For $12, guests enjoyed fresh corn on the cob, a hot dog, tomato, watermelon, and a drink. A 50/50 draw later in the afternoon brought a bit of friendly excitement.
Whether people came for the planes, the food, or simply to spend a day in good company, everyone went home with warm smiles and happy memories. For first-time visitors, it was a perfect introduction to the beauty, charm, and welcoming spirit of Sexsmith Airport, a true hidden gem in Ontario’s farmland.
Special thanks to the dedicated organizers and volunteers whose time, energy, and hospitality made the day such a success.
