Hawkefield 29th Annual Barnyard Fly-In

On Sunday, September 7, Hawkefield (CHF4) in Orono came alive for the 29th Annual Barnyard Fly-In, organized by the Oshawa District of the Recreational Aircraft Association and hosted by Hannu Halminen at his home airfield.

The morning started off with a gentle drizzle and comfortable temperatures. Sunshine and clouds drifted in and out as the day began. From as early as 7:30, classic motor vehicles began rolling in one by one. This year saw the biggest turnout yet for vintage cars and motorcycles. Not long after, the first visiting aircraft touched down, followed by several more. Once the sun broke through, the familiar buzz of engines filled the air as more planes arrived. Many attendees also drove in to enjoy the sights and sounds.

Live music filled the air as a band performed in the main hangar. On the ramp, two of Hannu’s aircraft, a Waco and a Harvard, were on display for visitors to admire. The 1943 Fairchild PT-26A Cornell from ECAF made a welcome return. For the first time at this event, rides could be booked right on site, and the aircraft stayed busy all day. One passenger, celebrating his birthday, enjoyed a flight gifted by his wife and came back with a big smile.

A variety of breakfast and lunch options was available for purchase. Many also enjoyed the tradition of free corn on the cob, generously offered by the host. The long-standing 50/50 draw added to the day’s activities.

Later in the afternoon, a short burst of heavier rain passed through, but most folks had already wrapped up their visit by then. As the skies cleared, a vibrant rainbow appeared, bringing a cheerful close to a memorable day.

It was a fantastic day for anyone who loves aircraft, classic vehicles, and great company. Whether catching up with old friends or spending time with family, the Barnyard Fly-In had something for everyone.

We would like to thank the organizer, the host, and every dedicated volunteer. Your time, generosity, and enthusiasm help make this event a truly special occasion for our community each year.
