The Stanhope Fall Colours Fly-In, organized by the Township of Algonquin Highlands and hosted at the Stanhope Municipal Airport, took place on Saturday, September 27. With free general admission and a wide variety of attractions, the event welcomed visitors from near and far for a full day of autumn fun.
From 10 am to 3 pm, the airport grounds came alive with aircraft, classic cars, local vendors and cheerful guests enjoying the crisp fall air. The morning began quietly, with calm skies and a gentle fog hanging over the surrounding hills. Volunteers and vendors were already hard at work setting up, while classic cars rolled in one by one. Shortly after 9 am, the first aircraft touched down, followed by a steady stream of arrivals as the fog lifted. By mid-morning, the airport was full of energy, with aircraft parked wingtip to wingtip and rows of gleaming cars drawing admiring looks.
This year’s event offered even more to enjoy. Visitors browsed displays from local artists and artisans, watched live music performed by Adverse Conditions – Highlands Soul Band, and treated the kids to face-painting by donation. The band’s set included familiar favourites, adding a lively soundtrack to the day.
Guests could also explore booths from the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association and the local fire department, grab a bite from food trucks, or take to the skies for a scenic flight. Airplane and helicopter rides were available for a fee, giving attendees a chance to admire the stunning fall colours from above.
The Stanhope Museum was on hand with its well-loved citron marmalade, available for $8 per jar. Proceeds help support the museum’s volunteer-run programs. Stanhope Airport T-shirts were also available in a range of styles and sizes, with sales going toward future airport events.
Pilots who arrived early were welcome to camp overnight on Friday, September 26, making it a full weekend experience for some.
The sense of community, the beauty of the changing leaves and the joy of aviation made for a memorable day all around. Sincere thanks to everyone who helped bring the event together, including the dedicated volunteers, organizers, participants and all the guests who came out to enjoy the day.
