February 14 to 16, Family Day Weekend at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum welcomed visitors with a full mix of learning, discovery, and hands‑on fun. This year’s theme, Things with Wings, filled the museum with energy as families explored aviation history, live demonstrations, and interactive activities.
One of the most popular features of the weekend was the Canadian Raptor Conservancy’s free‑flying bird of prey show. Held daily at 10 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm, each presentation gave guests a close look at these incredible birds in motion. As the birds took flight, the handlers shared interesting details about their appearance, behaviour, and natural abilities. The birds were only visible during show times, which made each demonstration feel like a special moment.
Visitors could also explore the museum’s impressive collection of more than forty historic Canadian aircraft. It was a wonderful chance to learn about the people and stories behind these machines. Pilots were available throughout the weekend to chat with guests and answer questions, adding a personal touch to the experience.
Families who enjoy hands‑on activities could join the Osborn Model Kits workshops. These sessions invited visitors to build a wooden aircraft model from a variety of designs inspired by well‑known aircraft. It brought a creative element to the weekend and offered a fun project for guests to share.
The museum’s digital exhibit, Making Freedom Fly, offered another engaging way to connect with history. Through life‑sized interactive avatars, visitors could hear stories and learn about the aircraft in a modern and memorable way.
For those who enjoy a bit of adventure, the flight simulators provided a great opportunity to test their skills. Visitors aged twelve and older could also try the Fly Zone virtual reality experience, which placed them right in the cockpit for a next‑level adventure.
Another highlight was Astronomy in Action’s Planetarium. This year’s show, Moon, guided guests through the history of Earth’s natural satellite and how it has changed over time. The presentation also looked at NASA’s Space Launch System and the mission that will send a crew of four, including Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, around the Moon in 2026. The 360 degree theatre created a calm and immersive space to enjoy the show.
Family Day Weekend at CWH offered a full day of discovery, learning, and fun. It was a wonderful way for families to spend time together while exploring the world of flight.
