Roger Deming hosted his very first Spring Breakout Brunch Fly-in at CDF6 Damascus Field on Saturday, May 2, and it turned out to be a wonderful way to kick off the season. Sponsored by KWRAA, the event brought together members of the aviation community along with friends and visitors.
Even though the brunch was set to begin at 10 am, we arrived around 8 and found Roger and Neneng already hard at work. Most of the setup was complete, and they were busy adding the final touches. The grass strip looked great, freshly trimmed and nicely levelled, ready to welcome arriving aircraft.
The weather felt more like early spring than May, with cool temperatures, grey skies, and even a brief burst of snow. For a moment, it made us wonder how many pilots would make the trip. After a long winter, though, it is hard to keep aviators away. While many guests chose to drive in, a handful of determined pilots still took to the skies. Six aircraft arrived throughout the morning, and each one brought plenty of smiles.
Before long, the hangar filled with familiar faces. Guests gathered inside to warm up with hot coffee and enjoy a variety of snacks. The highlight of the morning was the breakfast sandwiches prepared by Roger and Neneng. With sausage, bacon, egg, and cheese on a perfectly grilled English muffin, they were a big hit and did not last long.
Even with the chilly weather outside, the atmosphere inside was warm and welcoming. There was plenty of laughter, great conversation, and that familiar sense of community that makes these gatherings so special.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Roger, Neneng, KWRAA, and everyone who came out to support the event. The first Spring Breakout Brunch Fly-in was a great success, and it has already given us something to look forward to next year, hopefully with a bit more sunshine.
