On Saturday, May 23, the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre (WWFC) hosted its annual Girls Can Fly event, created to inspire the next generation, especially girls and young women, to discover opportunities in aviation and aerospace.
Although rain fell throughout the day, the event remained welcoming and full of energy. A total of 275 girls were registered for introductory flights. While the weather prevented the aircraft from flying, families still arrived in large numbers and filled the hangars with excitement and curiosity. Volunteers, pilots, exhibitors and flight crews helped keep the spirit of the event alive by sharing their passion for aviation.
Inside the WWFC hangars, visitors enjoyed more than 45 exhibitors featuring hands on activities, flight simulators and educational displays. The kids’ zone, face painting and interactive demonstrations added to the fun and made the event enjoyable for all ages. Exhibitors included Air Canada, Porter Airlines, WestJet, NAV CANADA, Transport Canada, Elevate Aviation and the Northern Lights Aero Foundation, along with colleges, aviation groups and community partners who welcomed guests and shared information throughout the day.
On the tarmac, several aircraft were on display for visitors to explore. Air Canada, Porter and Perimeter Aviation brought aircraft to the event, along with a few additional visiting aircraft that added to the displays. Waterloo Warbirds also showcased their well known T-33 Mako Shark Jet, which attracted plenty of attention from visitors throughout the day.
Girls Can Fly provided a positive and memorable experience for visitors of all ages. WWFC, along with its volunteers, sponsors and exhibitors, played an important role in making the day both educational and enjoyable. Their support continues to help open doors for young people interested in aviation, and we thank them for their ongoing dedication.
