Waterloo Warbirds Summer Open House and COPA Flight 26 Discover Aviation

On Saturday, June 13, the Waterloo Warbirds hosted their Summer Open House alongside COPA Flight 26’s Discover Aviation event at the Region of Waterloo International Airport in Hangar 33. Together, the two groups created a welcoming and family-friendly day that brought aviation enthusiasts, local families and first-time visitors together to enjoy flying, history and hands-on learning.

Waterloo Warbirds opened the doors of their hangar, giving visitors the opportunity to get up close to several historic aircraft. The T-33 Mako Shark Jet was displayed on the ramp, while the North American Harvard Mark II and Aero L-29 Viper Delfin were showcased inside the hangar. Guests had the chance to chat with pilots and volunteers, learn about the care and maintenance of these Cold War era aircraft, and take photos beside the jets. The merchandise table stayed busy throughout the day, with the popular Mako Shark plush toy becoming a favourite among younger visitors. Children also enjoyed collecting colourful stickers from the various displays, adding a bit of extra fun to their visit.

At the same time, COPA Flight 26 offered free introductory flights as part of the Discover Aviation program. Ten volunteer pilots took part, flying eight airplanes and one helicopter. More than 130 passengers enjoyed a flight over the region and received a certificate to mark the experience. For many, it was their first time seeing the area from the air, and the excitement was easy to spot as each aircraft returned to the ramp.

The Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre was also on hand with an information booth where visitors could learn more about flight training opportunities. Their electric Pipistrel Velis Electro was on static display and attracted plenty of attention throughout the day. Adding even more variety to the aircraft lineup were two PT-26 Cornell aircraft and a Steen Skybolt, also displayed on the ramp.

A sincere thank you goes to Waterloo Warbirds, COPA Flight 26, Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre, and all the volunteers and participants who helped make the day such a success. The event would not have been possible without the pilots who generously donated their time, brought their own aircraft and covered their fuel costs so visitors could enjoy a free flight experience.

A special thank you also goes to Derek Hammond, President and Director of Flight Operations at Waterloo Warbirds, for providing the facility, making an aircraft available for passenger flights, assisting with fuel costs and ensuring volunteers were well looked after with food and refreshments. Through the generosity, dedication and teamwork of everyone involved, guests enjoyed a memorable day while discovering the excitement and wonder of aviation.
